How Restructuring a Reading List Helped a Slow Reader Keep Up
Miriam Tzur spent a semester watching her 11-year-old Yotam fall behind in reading comprehension while his classmates moved ahead. He read slowly but carefully. The issue was not attention or effort.
After a conversation with his teacher, Miriam realized the assigned texts were dense, long, and built for fluent readers who could skim and self-correct. Yotam could not skim. He processed every sentence in sequence, which meant he often ran out of time before reaching the point of a passage.

Yotam began finishing assigned readings within the class period. His comprehension scores on short quizzes improved, not because the questions got easier but because he arrived at the end of a passage knowing what he had just read. He was no longer spending cognitive effort on orientation while also trying to track meaning.
Miriam is clear that this did not fix his reading speed. That is a separate and longer process. What it fixed was the immediate problem of content that assumed a reading fluency he had not yet built.
When Miriam described this at a school information evening, several parents asked which app she used. She used a notebook and a pen. The optimization was in how the content was framed before Yotam touched it, not in the delivery technology.
